Why Visit Simien Mountains

The Simien Mountains National Park is one of Africa's most dramatic alpine landscapes, characterized by massive volcanic erosions that created jagged vertical precipices, deep chasms dropping over 1,500 meters, and wide undulating Afro-alpine tussock plateaus.

Historical Context

Created over millions of years by volcanic basalt flows and subsequent deep glacial erosion, the Simien massif became one of the original four sites inscribed on UNESCO's initial World Heritage list in 1978.

Cultural & Sacred Heritage

Beyond its breathtaking geological spectacle, the park provides sanctuary to rare and endangered endemic species including the vegetarian Gelada baboon, the Walia ibex mountain goat, and the endangered Ethiopian wolf.

Essential Traveler FAQs

Are gelada baboons dangerous to hikers?

No. Geladas are gentle herbivores that spend their days grazing grass on the plateau. You can sit peacefully just meters from hundred-strong family troops.

How cold does it get at night?

Freezing. Nighttime campsite temperatures regularly drop to -5°C (23°F). A high-grade 4-season sleeping bag and thermal layers are vital.
