Why Visit Axum

Axum was the heart of the mighty Aksumite Empire, which controlled trade between the Roman Empire and ancient India from the 1st to the 8th century CE. Today, it stands as Ethiopia's spiritual capital and an open-air archaeological treasure house.

Historical Context

Famed Persian philosopher Mani once ranked Aksum alongside Rome, Persia, and China as one of the four great world powers of antiquity. It was here in 330 CE that King Ezana converted to Christianity, making Ethiopia one of the earliest Christian nations on earth.

Cultural & Sacred Heritage

According to centuries of Ethiopian tradition, the Chapel of the Tablet at St. Mary of Zion guards the original Ark of the Covenant, brought from Jerusalem by Menelik I, the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.
