Gheralta Mountains
Sheer sandstone spires housing 6th-century cliff-face sanctuaries and awe-inspiring vertical climbs.
Why Visit Gheralta Mountains
The Gheralta plain is punctuated by dramatic rust-red sandstone pillars rising dramatically from the desert floor. Hidden high up in these cliff faces are over 120 rock-hewn churches, some accessible only by climbing sheer rock walls using hand- and footholds.
Historical Context
Carved between the 4th and 10th centuries by the "Nine Saints" who arrived from Syria and Byzantium, these churches were built in high inaccessible aeries to seek spiritual isolation and escape medieval invasions.
Abuna Yemata Guh is internationally known as the most inaccessible place of worship on Earth. Priests climb barefoot up a 200-meter vertical cliff face daily to conduct services surrounded by 500-year-old wall frescoes.
