Tiya Megalithic Site
A UNESCO World Heritage prehistoric cemetery featuring towering carved megalithic stelae engraved with ancient swords.
Why Visit Tiya Megalithic Site
Located just 85 kilometers south of Addis Ababa in the Gurage zone, Tiya is the most prominent of more than 160 archaeological stelae sites found across the Soddo region of central Ethiopia.
Historical Context
Dating between the 12th and 14th centuries, the cemetery contains 36 standing stone megaliths marking the tombs of warrior chieftains. The stelae are carved with enigmatic relief carvings of swords, enigmatic plant motifs, and anthropomorphic symbols whose precise cultural meaning remains a fascinating mystery.
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980, Tiya testifies to a sophisticated prehistoric culture that flourished in central Ethiopia before the modern era.
